ARCHIVE NEWS 2014

17th November 2014

Jim Laidler has been awarded the Bowls England Certificate of Merit in recognition of his services to bowls at club, county and national level. He is one of eight to receive the award this year and it was presented to him at the County Lunch and Presentation of Prizes by Margaret Docherty,Director of Bowls England and Chair of the National Competitions Committee.

10th November 2014 - Eric Johnson (Cumbria)

Eric Johnson (Cumbria County Secretary)
Sadly the sport of bowls lost another good servant, Eric sadly collapsed and passed away while returning from a Northern Counties meeting in York. His organisational skills and his enthusiasm both on and off the green towards the sport were second to none. Long serving County Secretary, Northern Counties Secretary and more recently part of the Finance committee with Bowls England is a demonstration of his willingness to give something back to the sport. Eric was a very good friend to many within Bowls Durham and will be sorely missed.

28th September 2014 - Team Manager Announcement

At the last Meeting of the Bowls Durham Management Committee the members gave consideration to the Appointment of the County's Team Managers for the next three years term. Current Team Manager Andrew Kirtland had already indicated not to seek re-election to the post of Middleton Cup/Muras Trophy Manager. As a result the Committee have placed on record their thanks and appreciation for all the valuable work, time and effort that Andrew put into the role.

Bowls Durham Management Committee are pleased to announce the appointment of David Bolt as Team Manager for the Middleton Cup/Muras Trophy and that Paul Heath has agreed to extend his stay as Team Manager for the Alsop Cup Team, both roles will run for a three year term commencing with effect from the 16th September 2014

24th September 2014 - England Recall

Following the recent success in the National Fours at Leamington Spa Silksworth's David Bolt has been rewarded with a recall to the England Senior Team for next years Home International series, sadly our other hope at the recent trials Elm Tree's Glenn Skipp missed out on being selected but congratulations to Glenn on representing England in the last two series.

8th September 2014 - Northern Counties Round up

This years championships were held at Kirkbride BC, Cumbria. Overall we lifted one title but with a bit of luck it could well have been four. The only success came in the triples where Darlington RA's Mark Jones, John Hills and Tony Macey defeated Cumbria 15-14, the win was Tony Macey's third triples title the others being 2008 and 2011. In the singles final RA's Andrew Kirtland missed out on a third singles title while the Leeholme pairing of Jason Taylor and Barry Attwood also tasted defeat in the pairs final. In the fours final the new National champions Silksworth's Phil Dixon, Neal Ridley, Ian Riches and David Bolt had to settle for runners up. In the Junior Singles RA's Liam Macey lost in the semi final and Leadgates Dave Warnaby went down in the Two Bowl semi final.

1st September 2014 - Stella Season Ends on a High

Our Ladies Stella Logan squad brought the curtain down on the season with a hard fought six shot win over Cumbria at Horden, the defeat however didn't affect Cumbria's title hopes as they finished on top by five points. Across the green we had three winning rinks with the pick of them being Dorothy Hudson, Fay Slinn, Sam Pattison and Jane Pattison who ran out 25-9 winners which saw us take eight points out of the eleven on offer. Sadly we couldn't repeat last years title success but a third spot finish with a 5-3 win record was a decent effort. Rink Scores can be found via this link

The defeat however doesn’t end all hopes of retaining the title but with Cumbria and Lancashire with an extra game left to play it will take an unlikely run of results to see the title retained. The ladies final game of the season is on September 1st against leaders Cumbria at Horden...... Rink scores

27th July 2014 - County Finals Day

Click on this link for a full review of the days finals - link

26th July 2014 - Northern Trophy Retained

Our Northern Trophy ladies squad went into the season’s final fixture against Yorkshire knowing that they needed a win to retain the Trophy. Bishop Auckland played hosts to the final game and happily it was a good day for our ladies as they ran out 32 shot winners but more importantly collected 9½ points to retain the Northern Trophy, across the green we had four winning rinks and one draw with the pick of the bunch being the rink of Joan Brown, Jane Piggford, Joyce Woodward and Gill Jones who ran out 29-13 winners. The result leaves us thirteen points clear at the top with a season record of five wins and one defeat in the six game season, many congratulations to all the squad members. Rink scores

19th July 2014 - Stella Logan Hopes Raised

Our Stella Logan ladies squad knew nothing but a win at Darlington Woodlands against group leaders Lancashire would keep hopes of retaining the title alive, well cometh the hour cometh the woman. A must needed 17 shot win and nine vital points has hauled the ladies back into the melting pot and with two games to play are now only four points behind leaders Lancashire. Across the green we had four winning rinks with the pick of the bunch being the 25-14 win by Dorothy Hudson, Fay Slinn, Maureen Firth and Jane Pattison. The ladies next game isn't until late August against Yorkshire down at Scarborough. Rink scores

12th July 2014 - John's Trophy Exit

Sadly our ladies great run in this season's John's Trophy came to an end at Shipton in the Quarter Finals, going down by 15 shots to Lincolnshire. On the green it was a case of whether three winning rinks could cover three losing rinks..... sadly we fell short. Our top rink was Joan Brown, Jane Piggford, Joyce Woodward and Gill Jones who ran out 25-10 winners while there were wins for Joan Rodgerson and Teresa Pearson, despite the defeat the ladies can take positives from reaching the Quarter Finals and look to go one step further next season. Rink Scores

11th July 2014 - Stella Logan Hopes Raised Again

Despite having suffered two defeats in four games our Stella Logan Ladies squad kept alive hopes of retaining the title with an impressive 42 shot win at Gosforth over bottom of the table Northumberland, more importantly we collected 9½ points. Across the green we had three up and one level with the pick of the scores being the 30-13 win by Jennifer Howey, Pat Johnson, Liz Morris and Janet Ridpath. Next week Lancashire pay a visit to Darlington Woodlands and with 11 points between the teams our ladies need a win. Rink scores

5th July 2014 - John's Trophy Tour de Force

Our John's Trophy squad travelled to Copmanthorpe to face group leaders Notts in what was a winner take all final group fixture. Our ladies needed a win to make the last eight and happily a cracking team performance sealed a narrow 4 shots win but more importantly 18 points. Across the green we had 4 rinks up and 2 down, two of our rinks both won 24-15 (Joyce Stephenson, Marjorie Taylor, Anne Bernard, Teresa Pearson) and (Joan Brown, Jane Piggford, Joyce Woodward, Gill Jones). The 18 points secured top spot in the group by 4 points and sets up a Quarter Final against Lincolnshire, that game has already been arranged for Saturday 12th July at Shipton, York. rink scores

5th July 2014 - Middleton Cup Woe

The A team needed 8 points to secure a Q/Final place but sadly history repeated itself and we missed out on qualifying by a single point. The final group fixture saw us face Lancashire at Dairy Lane and despite looking in charge at several stages of the game things went pear shaped as Lancashire produced some head changing bowls to run out 11 shot winners and restricting us to just 5 points. Across the green only Billy Ferry's quartet returned a winning card 20-19 while three others drew and one lost by a single shot. With Northumberland's 20-2 win over Lincolnshire we needed 4 rinks up so the three draws were a case of what might have been, Northumberland qualify for the Q/Finals. rink scores

The game also doubled up as a Muras result, despite the defeat it leaves us top of the group with only Northumberland able to take the title away from us, they need 22 points in the final game against Yorkshire.

4th July 2014 - Northern Trophy Win

Our Northern Trophy squad travelled to Wooler to face a Northumberland squad bouyant from the first win of the season. Well it was good day for our ladies as they ran out 42 shot winners but more importantly collecting nine vital points in the process. Out of the six rinks we had four winners and two losers, pick of the bunch was the rink of  Susan Forster, Edna Stokoe, Glynis Morgan and Joan Rodgerson who eased to an impressive 37-6 win. This years title will be decided in the final game against Yorkshire on 25th July at Bishop Auckland. rink scores

30th June 2014 - County Finals Venue Change

It has been confirmed that this years County finals will not take place at current President Jeff Wilson's home green of Herrington Workmen, it has been agreed to move the finals to Houghton Dairy Lane.

The planned Tyne & Wear Under 25 fixture has been cancelled due to Northumberland being unable to field a team.

28th June 2014 - Alsop defeat ends title hopes

This was going to be the decider for our Alsop squad as they navigated the Wigton carnival to take on unbeaten Cumbria at Wigton Park. On a grease lightening surface our lads made a cracking start leading by 13 overall however the hosts gradually clawed there way back to lead by 4 at the half way mark. Not deterred we batteld back to lead by 3 at the 15 end mark but a late Cumbrian charge took its toll as they ran out winners by 10 shots and collecting 17 points in the process. Across the green we had two up and one level with the pick of the bunch being M.Gleeson, V.Tunstall, S.Clarke and R.Robinson who ran out 26-16 winners. The result secures the Alsop Trophy for Cumbria and it is unlikely the postponed Yorkshire fixture will be played...... rink scores

27th June 2014 - Northern Trophy Squad Win

In a top of the table battle the Ladies NT squad battled hard to record a cracking 126-119 win at Harrogate BC over unbeaten Yorkshire to ease the John's Trophy loss earlier in the month. Across the green we had three winnnig rinks and a drawn rink, top rink was Joan Brown, Jane Piggford, Joyce Woodward and Gill Jones who ran out 25-12 winners. Next is a trip to Alnwick to face Northumberland. Rink scores and latest table link

23rd June 2014 - Alsop Squad Remain Unbeaten

The B team made the long trip to Heaton Hall to face Lancashire in the latest round of Alsop fixtures, after the previous wash outs in Manchester it was a relief to get the game played. As is the norm the team manager had to make changes to the selected team (five in total) however the lads put in a sterling performance to record a 128-103 win collecting 18 points in the process. Top rink was skipped by Alan J Dunn who ran out 33-11 winners and across the green we only lost on a couple of rinks.....rink scores .........Next is a trip to leaders Cumbria,

22nd June 2014 - Walker Cup Holders Exit

Hopes of the ladies Walker Cup double fours squad repeating last years fantastic national title success were scuppered in the first round, facing Lincolnshire at Dunnington our ladies went down overall by 24 shots. Ann Anderson's quartet sneaked a 17-16 win however Gill Jones quartet were heavily beaten 35-10.

22nd June 2014 - Double Fours Exit

Kirbymoorside is rapidly becoming the counties second home as the regional finals day of the Balcombe Trophy were held there. Sadly our lads missed out on the final as Lancashire inficted a 44-36 semi final defeat, both our rinks went down - David Bolt lost 23-19 and Paul Mosley lost 21-17 although both can count themselves unlucky. Just for the record Lancashire went on to beat Yorkshire by 11 shots in the final to qualify for Lemington Spa

21st June 2014 - Johns Trophy Disappointment (updated)

The Ladies suffered a 36 shot defeat in the latest round of John's Trophy fixtures against Yorkshire played at York Railway. Out of the six rinks we only had two winnings cards, Teresa Pearson 20-15 and Joan Rodgerson 21-19 - despite the defeat the ladies can still top the group as they face a winner takes all final group fixture on July 5th, Notts currently have a 10 point lead which would mean our ladies need to collect more than 18 points to guarantee a Quarter Final berth. Rink Scores

20th June 2014 - Stella Logan Squad Bounce back

After the previous defeat to Cumbria our Stella Logan Ladies team bounced back to winning way with a hard fought 121-112 win over unbeaten Lancashire at Bolton BC. On the day we had three winning rinks with the pick being Margaret Metcalfe, Margaret Riley, Jean Mather and Jenny Collin who ran out 30-13 winners. Our ladies collected 8pts from the fixture but reamin 11½ points behind leaders Lancashire with all five counties having playerd four games...... rink scores

16th June 2014 - Bad Day at Cumbria for Stella Ladies

It turned into a long day for the Stella Logan squad as they made the trek to Caldbeck BC to face Cumbria only to go down by 22 shots and returning home with a solitary point. The defending champions only had one winning rink and that was Margaret Metcalfe, Margaret Riley, Jean Mather and Jenny Collin who ran out 31-22 winners. It could have been a better day for the ladies as Maureen Firth’s quartet and Janet Ridpath’s quartet both went down by a single shot. The defeat leaves us bottom of the group and it will take a big effort to repeat last year’s title win. Rink Scores

16th June 2014 - Under 25's Bow Out

Our Under 25 Double Fours squad were beaten in the Semi Finals by Cumbria 40-17 at the regional Final's Day held at Kirbymoorside BC on Sunday, rink scores will be added when available

16th June 2014 - Middleton Cup Win

The Middleton Cup squad performed their own version of “The Great Escape” on Saturday as they came from behind to defeat Northumberland by 18 shots at Alnwick in the second round of group matches. At 5 ends the lads were 20 shots down and by the 10 end mark the deficit had only been decreased by a single shot to 19, however the spirit shown by the full squad to rally back into the game brought memories back of the Class of 2000, by 15 ends the charge was on and the gap was down to just 9 shots and from then on the momentum was with the lads as they finished 18 shots up to record one of the Counties finest wins in recent years. Across the green we had three winning rinks with Glenn Skipp’s quartet running out 28-12 winners while Paul Mosely’s rink ran out 29-15 winners. The win puts the lads top of the group however they will still need to beat Lancashire in the final group game at Houghton in July to seal a Quarter final place.  Rink Scores

9th June 2014 - Durham County Council Changes

The Durham & District Secretary Brian Slinn has contacted Bowls Durham Secretary Foster Johnson to make him aware of Durham County Councils proposals and the potential impact it may have on grass roots clubs and bowlers. Brian has added “there are additional grant sources available to clubs particularly those affiliated to Bowls England to help them through the changeover and avoid the loss of bowls facilities”.  Following on from this Foster has agreed to try to help those affected clubs, whether affiliated or not, by contacting Bowls England and seeking from them what advice and assistance they can offer, he is willing to advise not only clubs under the Durham County Council umbrella but ALL clubs. Attached is a copy of the planned changes taken from the Durham & District Bowling League website...... document

9th June 20014 - Mixed Weekend for County

The weather was the winner at Stockton as the B team's Alsop Cup fixture against Yorkshire was abandoned, unlike the Muras Cup a couple of weeks ago the 72 end mark hadn't been reached and with only 63 ends played across the board and with Yorkshire in the lead it was decided the green was unfit for play. The fixture is now on hold and will only be played subject to the league standings in July.

The Balcombe Trophy double fours have progressed to the regional finals following a 55-30 win over Lincolnshire at what is now becoming the counties second home Kirbymoorside. Double rinks won, Paul Mosley's quartet won 19-16 while David Bolt finished 11 up...... scores

6th June 2014 - Ladies Northern Trophy win

In the latest round of NT matches our County Ladies put in a five star performance at Houghton Dairy Lane to avenge the earlier defeat at the hand of Cumbria win a 139-101 win. Out of the six rinks we had three up and three rinks down, top rink on the day was Fay Slinn, Pat Johnson, Joan Mason and Ann Anderson who romped to a 31-11 win, there were wins for Joan Rodgerson 29-10 and Gill Jones 25-9. Out of the three losing rinks Trudy Kitto went down by 2 and Anne Camp down by a single shot, the remaining rink skipped by Teresa Pearson wemt down by 16 shots, points wise we collected 8 of the 11 on offer but we will need to get a big result in the next round of fixtures against group leaders Yorkshire at Harrogate in three weeks time. Rink scores link

3rd June 2014 - BE Top Club rule clarification

Following a number of requests for clarification regarding the rules regarding the playing of extra ends in the Bowls England Men’s National Top Club Competition, the Board of Bowls England has resolved that the following amendment (highlighted in italics) be made to Regulation 63.6 with immediate effect:
 6. Before the commencement of the match, the nominated managers will toss a coin to decide the choice of jack for the first and extra end (if required), make the draw for rinks for each discipline and will decide if the two singles matches will be played on the same rink, one after the other. If not all disciplines will commence at the same time. Each discipline will be played to a result with extra ends played in all disciplines should they be tied (other than the four wood singles) – no drawn matches. The winning side will be the one winning the most disciplines.

31st May 2014 - Triple success for Bowls Durham

It was a cracking day for three of the county teams as we enjoyed wins in the Middleton Cup, the Northern Counties Alsop Cup and the ladies Johns Trophy.

Middleton Cup- After narrowly missing out by a single point last year the A team made a cracking start to this years Middleton Cup by defeating Lincolnshire by 41 shots collecting 20 points in the process. Only John Fielding's quartet were beaten while John Mansfield's quartet were top rink with a 26-8 win. The rink scores can be viewed via this link

Alsop Cup - The B team opened their defence of the Northern Counties Alsop Cup with another impressive win at Houghton Dairy Lane, last season we sneaked home by 3 shots - this season we romped to a 67 shot win collecting all 22 points in the process. The only downside on the day was the number of changes and thanks to Dave Kilner, Dan Todner and Jimmy Swinney for playing and saving the county the embarrassment of playing short and to June & Judith for the catering. Top rink was Mark Gleeson, Vince Tunstall, Stuart Clarke and Ray Robinson who recorded a 27-13 win. The rink scores can be viewed via this link

Johns Trophy - The ladies travelled to a neural venue in York to face Derbyshire in the John's opener and it proved to be a very fruitful day for the ladies. We only had one losing rink out of the six and that was only by a single shot as the ladies ran out 129-95 winners but more importantly collected 20 points, the top scoring rink was Joyce Stephenson, Marjorie Taylor, Anne Bernard and Teresa Pearson with a 27-11 win, the rest of the rink scores can be found via the following link

30th May 2014 - Stella Logan Squad Win

The Ladies Stella Logan squad bounced back to winning ways with a 12 shot win over Northumberland at Stockton BC. Out of the six rinks we had three winning cards and two defeats and a draw. Top rink on the day was  Liz Morris, Jennifer Howey, Jane Pattison and Janet Ridpath who recorded a 27-14 win. The rest of the rink scores can be found via this link

24th May 2014 - Ladies Bounce Back

Following the opening 18 shot defeat in the Northern Trophy the Durham Ladies A team bounced back to winning ways with a 19 shot over Northumberland at Spennymoor. Across the green we had three winning rinks, Ann Anderson 22-13, Anne Camp 30-22 and Teresa Pearson 34-12. The three losing cards saw defeats for Joan Rodgerson 18-12, Trudy Kitto 20-18 and Joyce Woodward 27-15, point wise the ladies collected eight of the eleven on offer. Next weekend the ladies face Derbyshire in the opening John's Trophy fixture.

24th May 2014 - Muras Win before wash out

The County A team made the long trek to Manchester for the now traditional Muras Trophy double header, sadly it proved a frustrating trip as rain stopped play. The opening game against Yorkshire started before being halted due to the rain however as 72 ends were played and with Durham leading 84-60 the result stood. Despite a few late changes our lads returned five winning scorecards, John Mansfield beat C.Kelly 22-7, team manager Andrew Kirtland defeated D.Clarke 13-11, Wayne Funnell defeated D.Kelly 13-10, Phil Smithson defeated N.Brignall 18-7 and Paul Mosely defeated A.Cook 14-9, the only defeat was suffered by John Fielding who went down 16-4 to S.Burrell. The planned second game against Lancashire never got started therefore when the two counties meet in the Middleton Cup that result will now become a Middleton/Muras double header. The County would like to thank the players for making the long trip to Manchester. Latest Table

The other game played saw Northumberland defeat hosts Lancashire 19-3.

25th April 2014 - Bowls England

Good Afternoon All,

Please see below copy of statement posted on the Bowls England website and social media pages today, regarding the 2014 Bowls England National Competitions for your information:

On behalf of Bowls England, I wish to apologise to all entrants in National Competitions for any inconvenience caused by the delay in circulating notifications regarding their opening fixtures in this year’s events. Unfortunately, we have experienced significant issues with the e-mail notification system used for National Competitions, which is provided to us via a third party. Therefore all players/teams in rounds closing in the first couple of weeks in May were sent notification of the draw by post on Thursday 17th April whilst work continued to resolve the system.

Our provider has worked jointly with Bowls England to resolve the matter since that date, with postal notifications continuing to be sent with preference given to those whose first fixtures fall later in May. The issues with the system appear to have been resolved today and all entrants who supplied an e-mail address should shortly receive details (this may be in addition to any cards previously issued).

The failure of the e-mail system significantly impacted on the overall workload of our relatively small staff team, but they responded to the challenge and I wish to publicly take this opportunity to recognise their efforts during this most challenging period and thank you for your patience and understanding.

Chief Executive Bowls England

16th April 2014 - Bowls England

Bowls England wishes to inform clubs that anyone using or purchasing chemicals for their greens maintenance programme must have undertaken suitable training.

The Plant Protection Products (PPPs) Regulations 2012 state that all users must have a recognised certificate of competence, and it is illegal to purchase PPPs unless the unless the user holds a certificate of competence.

The exemption for those who spray using the ‘Grandfather Rights’ clause (for those suitably trained and competent to do the job born before 31stDecember 1964) ceases on 26th November 2015. A new City & Guilds qualification has been introduced to enable who currently apply chemicals under the ‘Grandfather Rights’ exemption to comply with the legislation.

Funding is now available via the Bowls England Greens Maintenance Scheme to assist members of affiliated clubs that wish to attend a spraying course.

Tony Allcock MBE, Bowls England Chief Executive, said: “There has been some confusion amongst our members with regard to the legislation regarding spraying, particularly with regard to the ‘Grandfather Rights’ exemption. We would encourage all clubs to ensure that anyone that is spraying chemicals on the green meets the requirements of the PPP Regulations, and to assist we are pleased to be able to make funding available to support those who wish to attend a relevant course.”

Anyone wishing to apply for assistance should forward copies of the appropriate certificates and receipted invoices to Arnold Goad, Bowls England Greens Maintenance Scheme, on 01926 612280 or e-mail: arnold.goad@talktalk.net
